REQUISITE MAGAZINE

These two establishments are the works of James Anderson. Located in South East Essex in the coastal town of Leigh on Sea. They both have their own great characters.

The Oaktree, being the main restaurant, covers every aspect of a great dining experience. The large restaurant, which seats up to 50 diners inside and 20 outside is stylishly decorated in subtle shades and flower prints add colour to the walls.
The menu offers breakfast, small plates, main courses, sides and desserts as well as soft drinks and alcohol. The Oaktree is a vegetarian restaurant but offers a large amount of vegan food and drinks. I opted to try two of the mains from here, Vegan “Chicken Style” Caesar salad made with grilled chicken style soya pieces, vegan parmesan, mixed salad, garlic croutons and a Caesar-style dressing. My other choice was Creamy Pesto and Asparagus Gnocchi, a dish of potato dumplings in creamy pesto and vegan cheese sauce served with garlic ciabatta and salad. Both dishes were plentiful, fresh and tasty. It wasn’t an easy choice with so much on offer, including burgers, chilli, tarts and stir-fry dishes.

Now onto the Acorn which is located very close to the coast. This place is like the little sister to the Oaktree, a small deli with a rustic look. Serving lighter but plentiful dishes, The Acorn, being a deli, have shelves and fridges full of great vegan products for you snap up; vegan sauces, popcorns and vegan cheeses. But I was there to taste some of the food and cake. All the dishes on the menu are vegan. Breakfast and lunch menus are available. I chose an egg mayo sandwich from the lunch menu, which was made using tofu and was tempted by the citrus cake. The sandwich came with a side salad and coleslaw a great bite to eat with tons of flavour, I was surprised by how much the sandwich was like egg mayo from what I remember it being. But my favourite was the lemon cake, a soft, tangy and sweet treat to finish the meal.

The Acorn has a great selection of foods and drinks including soups, jacket potatoes and pastries as well as hot and cold drinks with free-from kinds of milk. Both these establishments are great to visit with plenty on offer and great, friendly staff.

THE PARTY P|IECE!
There are plenty of amazing vegan events in London, but one that started early in 2017 is growing in popularity every time it is on. The event itself is called Vegan Nights and plays host to a big mix of all things vegan, including food, drinks and live music. The event has now had its third night at the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane  Shoreditch if you haven’t been to Brick Lane before it is one place you need to visit as a vegan in London. It is packed with great food stalls on the weekends and was a great choice for Vegan Nights. The brewery itself is just like a big hall, but in addition, has the added bonus of an outdoor seating area and dancehall from the nightclub next door.

The décor and food for Vegan Nights volume three had a Christmas theme, with candy canes and garlands on the walls and a big balloon sign saying Happy Vegmas, which got you into the spirit of things, as for the food, there was plenty on offer from some of London’s most popular places including Temple of Seitan, What the Pitta and Cook Daily , all of which tended to have themed food. Temple of Seitan offered a festive bagel, a mix of Chick’n, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Besides the food, you also had clothing stalls and a built-in bar which was offering up classic vegan beers, wines and cocktails, which included some festive choices like the Winter warmer which was made with Havana Club, ginger beer, cinnamon, lime and allspice, there was plenty of choice for everyone.
So you haven’t been before then it is a must on your vegan list for 2018. It can get very busy so the earlier you go the better. You can check out more information on the events Facebook page. Just search Vegan Nights London.

I recently took a business/personal trip to Madrid Spain, a beautiful city with lots to see. But I am not here to talk to you about the history of Madrid but some of the best tasting plant-based food I have ever had. No messing it really was something else, so I decided to do a few posts about this food starting with Pizzi & Dixie.

A small Italian style restaurant in central Madrid. The overall feel of the place is positive with bright colours and creative decor giving off a young vibe while keeping it classy. The menu is in Spanish only but its worth the fuss of trying to translate it.

All the food is plant-based. Pizzi Dixie uses some interesting styles and ingredients, like the charcoal pizza base that comes out black/green or the bubble calzone pictured. The food has a vibrate taste with a great strong flavour and presentation, check out the purple gnocchi pictured, with pumpkin sauce and veg. The sauce was sweet and balanced by the veg, the gnocchi was cooked perfectly I highly recommend the gnocchi and the calzone. The calzone is very different from anything I've tried before. Firstly its a bubble filled with tomato, cheese and olives, it really has a punch to it. The vegan cheese is like nothing I've ever had before, truly amazing, and comes from the vegan store opposite. You can't really get fresher ingredients than that. Overall Pizzi Dixie was great on every level, customer service and food were all 5 star.

London is place you can always find a great vegan meal, and with the changing tides comes more and more vegan menus around the UK. This year alone Southend on Sea has gained some great new Cafes, Delis and Bars that offer up vegan menus, including the recently  opened Molo Lounge at the top of the High Street. Founded in 2002 the Lounge Group is actually a bar that started in Bristol. The venue is quirky with a mix of wooden tables, multicolour stalls and vintage art works covering the walls, it has a young vibe and it works well in Southend. The best part is their vegan menu.

The Food
Being a bar I was expecting the food  to be classic bar food of chips burgers and sandwiches, that it was, but the food is a bit more than your bog standard bar food. Serving breakfast, tapas, sides and main dishes, you have a fair bit to choose from. I opted for the  falafel & hummus ciabatta which comes with the vegan house slaw and some additional sides of sweet potato fries and steamed chilli  broccoli. It didn’t disappoint. The ciabatta was wonderful and although it looked simple, it was package with flavour. The red cabbage, wild rocket and carrot tapenade in a toasted ciabatta with hot falafel were a great combination. The fries were crisp( I hate soggy fries) and accompanied by the chilli broccoli. It was a nice mix of textures and tastes, to fill any hungry soul. Overall I had a good experience, with super food in a great venue.

Rubys have been scene across london at events and festivals including the Bafta members club, real food events and thames festival, we decided to take a walk down to their stall at the great Greenwich markets, they have a great selection of cakes and treats on offer, we choose these two cupcakes , one being lavender, a favourite of mine and we also choose piasecho , iam not the biggest fan of cupcakes , but we had heard such great things , we thought we would see what all the fuss was about, and well we can tell you it was worth the fuss, the cakes where heavenly, with a rich flavour that is balanced nicely and not overly sweet, a soft cream and beautiful baked base, it all fits together perfect.
