AMBIENCE
Summer is fast approaching and we all want to venture out to the beaches. One of the closest around and not far from London is the award winning Southend on Sea, home to the world’s longest pier and some great vegan venues. The Railway Hotel, located just right of Southend central train station, is a grand building with plenty of history. It was built in the Victorian era and in 2007 had a revamp to restore some of its Victorian splendour, including mosaic tiling, oak panelling and velvet curtains. It has plenty of character that leaves you feeling like you have stepped back in time. The Railway Hotel is not actually a hotel anymore, it’s a music venue, pizzeria and restaurant which plays host to live bands, spoken word and poet events. The walls covered in photos, posters, vintage bottles and books with mix and match tables and chairs, gives it a charm to it that can’t really be described.
FOOD
The menu isn’t your standard sort of pub menu, the Railway Hotel went meat free in 2012 and now all the dishes on offer are vegan with gluten free options as well. They are currently on their spring menu which includes the Grass Burger, Thai Green Curry, Roasted Stuffed Vine Leaves and a Seitan spare rib burger/wrap, with sides of chips and wedges and milkshakes on offer as well. There is also the pizzeria that has some great vegan options, located next to the main stage. If you haven’t had Seitan before it is a meat alternative made from wheat gluten with a chewy consistency We chose to try the Seitan Burger and the Mushroom Stroganoff both dishes where great with plenty of flavour, the BBQ sauce in the burger had a lovely smoke to it while still being sweet and came with some home cut chips and salad. The Stroganoff is usually a dish I would choose in the winter but now I think it’s an all year rounder, the sauce was heavenly with just the right amount of seasoning and was accompanied by jasmine rice. Overall the railway hotel was a great experience with great food in the heart of Southend culture.
